The Power of Singing and Movement in Early Childhood Education

Wayan Gian Nita Pertiwi, S.Pd.

The use of singing and movement plays a crucial role in kindergarten learning. Sekolah Anak Merdeka exemplifies this through their effective implementation, recognizing the positive impact it has on children's development.

Learning Through Fun and Engagement

Firstly, singing provides a gateway for children to learn in a way that is both enjoyable and stimulating. Simple, rhythmic songs naturally embed new vocabulary, language patterns, and even complex concepts within children's minds. Similarly, body movement strengthens the connection between mind and body. It supports the development of both gross and fine motor skills, and allows children to grasp abstract concepts through physical experiences.

Boosting Participation and Motivation

Secondly, the combination of singing and movement significantly increases children's engagement and participation in learning. Songs that incorporate body movements, such as jumping, dancing, or gesturing, make children more physically and mentally active. This creates a dynamic and enjoyable learning environment, where children are intrinsically motivated to participate and learn with a sense of joy. At Sekolah Anak Merdeka, this is exemplified through their morning routine, which involves circle time, morning exercise, and the incorporation of song and movement before transitioning into formal teaching and learning activities. This practice helps prepare children for managing emotions and regulating behavior.

Fostering Social Connections

Finally, the use of singing and movement strengthens social bonds between children. As they sing together and perform movements in unison, children learn to work collaboratively, share, and cooperate. These activities foster a sense of community and trust among classmates, creating a strong foundation for future collaborative learning experiences.

A Holistic Approach to Learning

For these reasons, singing and movement will continue to be a cornerstone of teaching and learning activities at Sekolah Anak Merdeka. This approach not only promotes individual learning effectiveness, but also fosters social and emotional learning, both of which are crucial for the holistic development of kindergarten-aged children.

I love to move it-move it …. (Surely you must be singing in silence when reading this line, right? 😊 )
